Northern Development Councils Youth

NDCs Recommend Ways to Create Opportunities for Youth in North

Ontario’s Northern Development Councils undertook a Northern Dialogue on creating opportunities for Youth as one of their first major tasks. After extensive discussions with people across Northern Ontario, the NDCs submitted 16 recommendations that reflect the priorities and values of northern communities.

Their recommendation # 1 is:
  1. Provide support including capital funding and staffing for community youth centres that partner to support youth by:
    A) Being a focal point for programs and activities including cultural, leadership, leisure and recreation;
    B) Providing for training and employment opportunities for youth;
    C) Providing an environment to bring forward a “youth” voice; and D) Demonstrating and helping communities become “youth friendly”.

This
is the newspaper article/opinion editorial written by Roy McMurtry and Alvin Curling on the Roots of Youth Violence to accompany their report. It is very suitable for posting at your locations or circulating or discussing
at a youth meeting (easier than discussing the 500 page report).

Do add your comments as they pertain to youth centres, especially more youth positive comments.
Do also email your MPP to inform them about the positive role youth centres play in the lives of youth across all regions of Ontario.

Send in your Best Fundraiser
Given the current economic conditions, which is affecting funding available from all funders, including foundations, we need to share ideas.  Especially important are those local community fundraisers that likely can operate in other areas of the country.  Sharing ideas is our strongest resource. TYPS is compiling a booklet on your Best Fundraisers.  This will be compiled and workshopped for the upcoming TYPS Conference, as well as posted online as a resource for TYPS members.  Click on this link to the form. - click here for a .pdf version

We are encouraging all youth centres and stakeholders communicating with TYPS to try out Skype, which is a computer based free phone service - it should save you and us bundles on long-distance phone costs.  Takes a few minutes to install, though you need high speed for the voice service.
